Description
Third Reich RAD Man’s Dagger — Ges. Gesch. Solingen
This is an original example of the Third Reich RAD Man’s Dagger, manufactured in Solingen and marked “Ges. Gesch.” on the reverse. Issued to members of the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) — the German Labour Service — these daggers formed part of the official dress of the organisation from the mid-1930s until the end of the Second World War.
Description
The dagger is fitted with a broad, polished steel blade, etched with the RAD motto “Arbeit adelt” (“Work ennobles”). The reverse bears the Ges. Gesch. Solingen maker’s mark, signifying Solingen’s role as the centre of edged-weapon production during the period.
The original scabbard accompanies the piece, featuring a decorative swastika within a spade-shaped emblem of the RAD.
Condition
The blade remains in very good condition, the motto clear and legible, with very light surface wear appropriate to age. The hilt fittings are well preserved, with a pleasing patina, and the scabbard retains structural integrity. Overall, this example presents as a immaculate and original RAD dagger, untouched and authentic.
Collectability
The RAD Man’s Dagger is one of the most visually striking of the Third Reich dress daggers, with its bold blade etching and emblematic hilt. Pieces marked Ges. Gesch. Solingen are especially appealing to collectors, as they represent Solingen’s renowned craftsmanship. Complete and original examples such as this remain in demand among militaria collectors and museums focused on edged weapons and the social history of the period.
